🔑Concepts

•

A molecule is the smallest particle of an element or a compound that is capable of an independent existence and shows all the properties of that substance. Examples: H2H_2, O2O_2, H2OH_2O.

•

Atomicity is the number of atoms constituting a molecule. For example, Argon (ArAr) is monoatomic, Oxygen (O2O_2) is diatomic, and Phosphorus (P4P_4) is tetra-atomic.

•

Molecules of compounds contain atoms of different elements joined together in definite proportions by mass. For example, in H2OH_2O, the ratio by mass of H:OH:O is 1:81:8.

•

An ion is a charged particle and can be negatively or positively charged. A negatively charged ion is called an anion (Cl−Cl^-), and a positively charged ion is called a cation (Na+Na^+).

•

Polyatomic ions are groups of atoms carrying a fixed charge, such as Nitrate (NO3−NO_3^-), Ammonium (NH4+NH_4^+), or Carbonate (CO32−CO_3^{2-}).

•

The chemical formula of a compound is a symbolic representation of its composition. The valencies or charges on the ions must balance to result in a neutral compound.

•

Molecular mass is the sum of the atomic masses of all the atoms in a molecule of the substance. It is expressed in atomic mass units (uu).

📐Formulae

Molecular Mass=∑(Atomic Mass of each atom×Number of atoms)\text{Molecular Mass} = \sum (\text{Atomic Mass of each atom} \times \text{Number of atoms})

Formula Unit Mass=Sum of atomic masses of all atoms in a formula unit of a compound\text{Formula Unit Mass} = \text{Sum of atomic masses of all atoms in a formula unit of a compound}

Ratio by Atoms=Mass RatioAtomic Mass Ratio\text{Ratio by Atoms} = \frac{\text{Mass Ratio}}{\text{Atomic Mass Ratio}}

💡Examples

Problem 1:

Write the chemical formula for Magnesium Chloride.

Solution:

MgCl2MgCl_2

Explanation:

The symbol for Magnesium is MgMg with a valency of 2+2+. The symbol for Chloride is ClCl with a valency of 1−1-. By crossing over the valencies, we get Mg1Cl2Mg_1Cl_2, written as MgCl2MgCl_2.

Problem 2:

Calculate the molecular mass of Nitric Acid (HNO3HNO_3).

Solution:

63 u63\,u

Explanation:

Atomic mass of H=1 uH = 1\,u, N=14 uN = 14\,u, and O=16 uO = 16\,u. Molecular mass of HNO3=1+14+(3×16)=15+48=63 uHNO_3 = 1 + 14 + (3 \times 16) = 15 + 48 = 63\,u.

Problem 3:

Write the formula for Aluminium Sulphate.

Solution:

Al2(SO4)3Al_2(SO_4)_3

Explanation:

Aluminium ion is Al3+Al^{3+} and Sulphate ion is SO42−SO_4^{2-}. Using the criss-cross method, the charge of the sulphate ion (22) becomes the subscript for AlAl, and the charge of aluminium (33) becomes the subscript for the polyatomic ion SO4SO_4. Brackets are used for the polyatomic ion: Al2(SO4)3Al_2(SO_4)_3.
