Mindful Eating: A Pathway to Health - Vitamins and Minerals

Grade 6CBSE

Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

Vitamins are known as 'Protective Foods' because they protect our body against diseases and help in keeping our eyes, bones, teeth, and gums healthy.

Vitamins are required by the body in very small quantities, yet their deficiency can lead to specific diseases.

Vitamins are classified into two groups: Fat-soluble (Vitamins A,D,EA, D, E, and KK) and Water-soluble (Vitamin BB-complex and Vitamin CC).

Minerals are inorganic elements needed by the body for various functions like building bones, teeth, and the formation of red blood cells (RBCsRBCs).

Calcium (CaCa) and Phosphorus (PP) are essential for the health of bones and teeth.

Iron (FeFe) is necessary for the formation of haemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood. Lack of Iron leads to Anemia.

Iodine (II) is required for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland. Its deficiency causes Goitre.

Mindful eating involves being aware of the nutritional value of food, such as ensuring a diet rich in vitamins and minerals to prevent deficiency diseases like Scurvy (Vitamin CC) and Rickets (Vitamin DD).

📐Formulae

Nutrients=Carbohydrates+Fats+Proteins+Vitamins+Minerals\text{Nutrients} = \text{Carbohydrates} + \text{Fats} + \text{Proteins} + \text{Vitamins} + \text{Minerals}

HaemoglobinIron (Fe) Intake\text{Haemoglobin} \propto \text{Iron (Fe) Intake}

Bone DensityCalcium (Ca)+Vitamin D\text{Bone Density} \propto \text{Calcium (Ca)} + \text{Vitamin D}

Thyroid HealthIodine (I)\text{Thyroid Health} \propto \text{Iodine (I)}

💡Examples

Problem 1:

A student finds it difficult to see in dim light or at night. Which vitamin is likely deficient in their diet, and what food should they eat?

Solution:

Vitamin AA

Explanation:

Deficiency of Vitamin AA causes 'Night Blindness'. To improve this, the student should eat foods like carrots, papaya, fish oil, and milk, which are rich in Vitamin AA.

Problem 2:

Identify the mineral deficiency if a person has swollen glands in the neck and mental disability in children.

Solution:

Iodine (II)

Explanation:

The swelling of the thyroid gland in the neck is a symptom of Goitre, which is caused by a lack of Iodine (II) in the diet. Iodized salt is a common source of this mineral.

Problem 3:

Why is it recommended to sit in the sunlight for some time every morning regarding bone health?

Solution:

To synthesize Vitamin DD.

Explanation:

Our body prepares Vitamin DD in the presence of sunlight. Vitamin DD helps the body use Calcium (CaCa) for strengthening bones and teeth. Deficiency can lead to Rickets, where bones become soft and bent.
