Geometry - Introduction to 3D Solids

Grade 3ICSE

Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

•

3D solids are three-dimensional shapes that have length, width, and height. The flat surfaces are called Faces, the lines where two faces meet are Edges, and the corner points where edges meet are Vertices.

•

A Cube and a Cuboid both have 66 faces, 1212 edges, and 88 vertices. In a cube, all faces are identical squares, while in a cuboid, the faces are usually rectangles.

•

A Cylinder consists of 22 circular flat faces and 11 curved surface. It has 22 curved edges and 00 vertices.

•

A Cone has 11 flat circular face, 11 curved surface, 11 curved edge, and 11 vertex at the top (the apex). A Sphere is perfectly round with only 11 curved surface, no edges, and no vertices.

📐Formulae

Total Faces of a Cube or Cuboid = 66

Total Edges of a Cube or Cuboid = 1212

Total Vertices of a Cube or Cuboid = 88

Faces of a Cylinder = 2 flat faces+1 curved surface=3 total2 \text{ flat faces} + 1 \text{ curved surface} = 3 \text{ total}

Vertices of a Cone = 11 (The Apex)

Properties of a Sphere: Faces=1,Edges=0,Vertices=0\text{Faces} = 1, \text{Edges} = 0, \text{Vertices} = 0

💡Examples

Problem 1:

Identify the 3D solid that has 66 rectangular faces, 1212 edges, and 88 vertices. Give one real-life example of this shape.

Solution:

  1. Look at the properties: 66 rectangular faces indicate a prism-like structure.
  2. Since the faces are rectangles, the shape is a Cuboid.
  3. Verify edges: 1212.
  4. Verify vertices: 88.
  5. Real-life example: A brick or a pencil box.

Explanation:

By checking the number of faces and their shape (rectangles), we can distinguish between a cube (square faces) and a cuboid (rectangular faces).

Problem 2:

Rohan has a solid that has 22 flat faces and 11 curved surface. How many edges does this solid have, and what is the name of the shape?

Solution:

  1. A solid with 22 flat circular faces and 11 curved surface is a Cylinder.
  2. The flat faces meet the curved surface at the top and bottom.
  3. Each meeting point forms a curved edge.
  4. Therefore, the number of edges is 22.

Explanation:

A cylinder is unique because it combines flat circular ends with a curved middle, resulting in exactly 22 curved edges.

Problem 3:

Look at the object shown below (a party hat). Identify its shape and state the number of vertices and edges it has.

A cone-shaped party hat with a vertex at the top and one curved edge.

Solution:

Shape=Cone\text{Shape} = \text{Cone} Vertices=1\text{Vertices} = 1 Edges=1\text{Edges} = 1

Explanation:

A party hat is shaped like a cone. It has one sharp point at the top called a vertex. It has one circular edge where the curved surface meets the flat circular base.

Problem 4:

A wooden block has 66 identical square faces. If you place two such blocks side-by-side as shown, what is the resulting shape and how many vertices does the new shape have?

Two cubes joined to form a cuboid.

Solution:

New Shape=Cuboid\text{New Shape} = \text{Cuboid} Vertices=8\text{Vertices} = 8

Explanation:

When two cubes are joined together, they form a longer shape called a cuboid. Although it is longer, the structure of a cuboid still has 88 corners (vertices).
