Materials Around Us - Observing Objects Around Us

Grade 6CBSE

Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

•

Objects are the things we see around us (e.g., chairs, books, toys). These objects are made of one or more substances called Materials (e.g., wood, plastic, metal).

•

Classification is the systematic grouping of objects based on similarities and differences in their properties. This helps in identifying and studying objects easily.

•

Appearance (Lustre): Some materials shine and are called lustrous. Metals like Gold (Au)\text{Gold (Au)}, Silver (Ag)\text{Silver (Ag)}, and Iron (Fe)\text{Iron (Fe)} exhibit lustre. Materials that do not shine are called non-lustrous.

•

Hardness: Materials that can be easily compressed or scratched are called Soft (e.g., Cotton). Materials that are difficult to compress are called Hard (e.g., Iron, Diamond).

•

Solubility: Substances that dissolve completely in water (H2OH_2O) are called Soluble (e.g., Sugar, Salt/NaCl\text{NaCl}). Substances that do not dissolve are called Insoluble (e.g., Sand, Chalk powder).

•

Buoyancy (Float or Sink): Objects with a density ρ\rho less than the density of water will float, while those with a higher density will sink.

•

Transparency: Materials like glass that allow light to pass through completely are Transparent. Materials that do not allow any light to pass are Opaque (e.g., Wood, Metal). Materials that allow light to pass partially are Translucent (e.g., Oiled paper).

📐Formulae

ρ=mV\rho = \frac{m}{V}

Density (ρ)=Mass (m)Volume (V)\text{Density (}\rho\text{)} = \frac{\text{Mass (}m\text{)}}{\text{Volume (}V\text{)}}

Relative Density=Density of SubstanceDensity of Water\text{Relative Density} = \frac{\text{Density of Substance}}{\text{Density of Water}}

💡Examples

Problem 1:

Calculate the density of a metal block that has a mass (mm) of 200 g200\text{ g} and a volume (VV) of 25 cm325\text{ cm}^3. Will it sink or float in water (Density of water is 1 g/cm31\text{ g/cm}^3)?

Solution:

Using the formula ρ=mV\rho = \frac{m}{V}, we substitute the values: ρ=200 g25 cm3=8 g/cm3\rho = \frac{200\text{ g}}{25\text{ cm}^3} = 8\text{ g/cm}^3.

Explanation:

Since the density of the metal block (8 g/cm38\text{ g/cm}^3) is greater than the density of water (1 g/cm31\text{ g/cm}^3), the object will sink.

Problem 2:

Calculate the total mass of two objects placed together if Object A weighs 564 g564\text{ g} and Object B weighs 238 g238\text{ g}.

Solution:

564+238802\begin{array}{r} 564 \\ + 238 \\ \hline 802 \end{array}

Explanation:

The total mass is calculated by adding the mass of Object A and Object B using vertical addition, resulting in 802 g802\text{ g}.

Problem 3:

Identify the type of material: A piece of frosted glass allows you to see a blurry shape of an object behind it.

Solution:

The material is Translucent.

Explanation:

By definition, a translucent material is one through which objects can be seen, but not clearly, because it allows only some light to pass through it.
