Energy—How Things Work - Renewable and Non-renewable Energy

Grade 5CBSE

Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

•

Energy is defined as the ability or capacity to do work. The standard unit of energy is the Joule (JJ).

•

Renewable Energy: These are sources that are replenished naturally and do not run out. Examples include Solar energy from the SunSun, Wind energy, and Hydro-energy from WaterWater.

•

Non-renewable Energy: These sources exist in limited quantities and take millions of years to form. Examples include fossil fuels like CoalCoal, PetroleumPetroleum, and NaturalGasNatural Gas.

•

Law of Conservation of Energy: Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only be transformed from one form to another. For example, in a bulb, Electrical Energy →\rightarrow Light Energy + Heat Energy.

•

Mechanical Energy is the sum of Kinetic Energy (K.E.K.E.), which is energy due to motion, and Potential Energy (P.E.P.E.), which is energy due to position or rest.

📐Formulae

Work(W)=Force(F)×Distance(d)Work (W) = Force (F) \times Distance (d), where distance is the displacement in the direction of force.

Total Mechanical Energy=Kinetic Energy(K.E.)+Potential Energy(P.E.)Total\ Mechanical\ Energy = Kinetic\ Energy (K.E.) + Potential\ Energy (P.E.)

Power=EnergyTime\text{Power} = \frac{\text{Energy}}{\text{Time}}

💡Examples

Problem 1:

A solar power plant generated 45004500 units of energy on Monday and 38003800 units on Tuesday. However, 12001200 units were lost during transmission. Calculate the total usable energy available from these two days.

Solution:

(4500+3800)−1200=7100(4500 + 3800) - 1200 = 7100 units.

Explanation:

First, we add the energy generated on both days: 4500+3800=83004500 + 3800 = 8300. Then, we subtract the transmission loss: 8300−1200=71008300 - 1200 = 7100 units.

Problem 2:

A village uses 95009500 kWh of energy per month. If 62506250 kWh is provided by non-renewable coal and the rest by wind turbines, how much energy comes from the renewable wind source?

Solution:

9500−62503250\begin{array}{r} 9500 \\ -6250 \\ \hline 3250 \end{array}

Explanation:

To find the renewable energy portion, we subtract the non-renewable energy from the total energy consumption: 9500−6250=32509500 - 6250 = 3250 kWh.
