Neural Control and Coordination - Brain (forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain)

Grade 11CBSEBiology

Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

•

The human brain is protected by the skull and three layers of cranial meninges: the outer Dura mater, the middle Arachnoid, and the inner Pia mater.

•

The Forebrain (Prosencephalon) consists of the Cerebrum, Thalamus, and Hypothalamus. The Cerebrum is divided into two hemispheres connected by the tract of nerve fibers called the corpus callosumcorpus\ callosum.

•

The Cerebral Cortex (grey matter) contains motor areas, sensory areas, and association areas. The inner part of the cerebral hemisphere consists of white matter due to the presence of myelin sheathsmyelin\ sheaths.

•

The Hypothalamus is the center for controlling body temperature (thermoregulation), urge for eating and drinking, and it secretes hypothalamic hormones.

•

The Limbic System is formed by the inner parts of cerebral hemispheres and deep structures like the amygdala and hippocampus. It regulates sexual behavior, emotions (excitement, pleasure, fear), and motivation.

•

The Midbrain (Mesencephalon) is located between the thalamus/hypothalamus and the pons. It contains the cerebral aqueductcerebral\ aqueduct and four round swellings (lobes) called corpora quadrigeminacorpora\ quadrigemina.

•

The Hindbrain (Rhombencephalon) comprises the Pons, Cerebellum, and Medulla oblongata. The cerebellum has a very convoluted surface to provide additional space for many more neurons.

•

The Medulla oblongata contains centers which control respiration, cardiovascular reflexes, and gastric secretions.

•

The Brain Stem is formed by the Midbrain+Pons+Medulla oblongata\text{Midbrain} + \text{Pons} + \text{Medulla\ oblongata} and forms the connection between the brain and the spinal cord.

📐Formulae

CNS=Brain+Spinal Cord\text{CNS} = \text{Brain} + \text{Spinal\ Cord}

Brain Stem=Midbrain+Pons+Medulla oblongata\text{Brain\ Stem} = \text{Midbrain} + \text{Pons} + \text{Medulla\ oblongata}

Meninges (Outer \toInner)=Dura mater→Arachnoid→Pia mater\text{Meninges\ (Outer \to Inner)} = \text{Dura\ mater} \to \text{Arachnoid} \to \text{Pia\ mater}

Limbic System=Hippocampus+Amygdala+Hypothalamus (parts)\text{Limbic\ System} = \text{Hippocampus} + \text{Amygdala} + \text{Hypothalamus\ (parts)}

💡Examples

Problem 1:

A person meets with an accident and loses the ability to maintain balance and posture while walking. Which specific part of the brain is likely injured?

Solution:

The Cerebellum.

Explanation:

The cerebellum, located in the hindbrain, is responsible for maintaining body equilibrium, posture, and coordinating precision in voluntaryvoluntary motor activities.

Problem 2:

Identify the 'Relay Station' of the brain and explain its significance.

Solution:

The Thalamus.

Explanation:

The Thalamus is a major coordinating center for sensory and motor signaling. It acts as a gateway where almost all sensory information (except smell) passess through before being sent to the cerebral cortexcerebral\ cortex.

Problem 3:

Calculate the approximate number of lobes in the corpora quadrigemina.

Solution:

44

Explanation:

The corpora quadrigemina is a part of the midbrain consisting of four (quadri-) colliculi (lobes) involved in visual and auditory reflexes.
