Plant Life - Uses of plants

Grade 3ICSE

Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

Plants as Food: Plants provide us with fruits, vegetables, cereals, and pulses. Different parts of plants are eaten, such as roots (Carrot), stems (Potato), leaves (Spinach), and flowers (Cauliflower).

Photosynthesis: Green plants make their own food using sunlight, water (H2OH_2O), and carbon dioxide (CO2CO_2). During this process, they release oxygen (O2O_2) into the air.

Medicinal Uses: Many plants have healing properties. For example, Tulsi leaves are used for coughs, Neem is used for skin infections, and Aloe Vera is used for skin care.

Fibers and Clothing: Plants like Cotton and Jute provide fibers. Cotton is used to make soft clothes, while Jute is used for making sacks, ropes, and mats.

Wood and Paper: Trees like Teak and Rosewood provide timber for furniture. Bamboo and Pine are used to make paper.

Beverages and Spices: We get tea from tea leaves, coffee from coffee beans, and spices like pepper, cardamom, and cloves from various plants to add flavor to food.

Environmental Balance: Plants help in maintaining the balance of O2O_2 and CO2CO_2 in the atmosphere, keeping the air fresh and clean.

💡Examples

Problem 1:

Identify the part of the plant we consume in the following: (a) Sugarcane, (b) Radish, (c) Cabbage.

Solution:

(a) Stem, (b) Root, (c) Leaves.

Explanation:

Plants store food in different parts. Sugarcane stores sugar in its stem, Radish is a modified root, and Cabbage consists of layers of leaves.

Problem 2:

Why are plants called the 'lungs of the Earth'?

Solution:

Because they take in CO2CO_2 and release O2O_2.

Explanation:

Through photosynthesis, plants consume carbon dioxide (CO2CO_2) which humans exhale and produce oxygen (O2O_2) which humans need to breathe, maintaining the atmospheric balance.

Problem 3:

Name two plants used for making fibers and two plants used for making medicines.

Solution:

Fibers: Cotton and Jute. Medicines: Neem and Tulsi.

Explanation:

Cotton provides soft fiber for thread; Jute provides strong fiber for bags. Neem has antibacterial properties, and Tulsi helps in treating respiratory issues.
