Family, Shelter, and Community - A House Like This: Different Types of Shelters

Grade 3CBSE

Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

A shelter is a place that protects us from heat, cold, rain, wild animals, and thieves. It maintains a stable environment for humans to live in.

Kutcha Houses: These are temporary houses made of materials like mud, straw, wood, and dry leaves. They are mostly found in villages and are not very strong.

Pucca Houses: These are permanent houses made of strong materials like bricks, cement, iron, steel (FeFe), and glass. They are found in towns and cities.

Igloos: Dome-shaped houses built using blocks of ice (frozen H2OH_2O). They are found in extremely cold, polar regions and are lived in by people called Eskimos or Inuit.

Stilt Houses: Built on wooden poles called 'stilts' in areas with very high rainfall and frequent floods. The elevation protects the house from water and insects.

Houseboats: Floating houses made of wood, commonly seen in Dal Lake (Kashmir) and the backwaters of Kerala.

Caravans and Tents: Caravans are houses on wheels that can move from place to place. Tents are portable shelters made of canvas or plastic, used for camping.

A good house should have proper ventilation for the flow of fresh air and windows to let in sunlight, which helps kill germs.

📐Formulae

H2O (Water - used in building construction and found as ice in Igloos)H_2O \text{ (Water - used in building construction and found as ice in Igloos)}

CaCO3 (Calcium Carbonate - found in limestone and cement used for Pucca houses)CaCO_3 \text{ (Calcium Carbonate - found in limestone and cement used for Pucca houses)}

Fe (Iron - used in the form of steel rods to provide strength to buildings)Fe \text{ (Iron - used in the form of steel rods to provide strength to buildings)}

💡Examples

Problem 1:

Why do houses in hilly areas where it rains or snows heavily have sloping roofs?

Solution:

Sloping roofs allow rain and snow (H2OH_2O in solid form) to slide off easily.

Explanation:

If the roofs were flat, water or snow would collect on top, causing the roof to leak or collapse under the weight.

Problem 2:

Identify the type of house that can be folded and carried easily from one place to another.

Solution:

A Tent.

Explanation:

Tents are made of lightweight materials like canvas or nylon and can be dismantled, folded, and moved easily, making them ideal for campers or nomads.

Problem 3:

In which state of India would you most likely find a Stilt house?

Solution:

Assam.

Explanation:

Assam receives very heavy rainfall. To prevent floodwater from entering the living area, houses are built on stilts high above the ground.
