Shapes and Designs - Edges and Corners

Grade 3CBSE

Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

•

Edges are the boundary lines of a shape. They can be straight, like the side of a notebook, or curved, like the edge of a circular plate. In 3D shapes, an edge is where two flat surfaces meet.

•

Corners, also known as vertices, are the sharp points where two or more edges meet. For example, a square has 44 corners where its straight sides join together. Shapes like circles and spheres have no corners.

•

2D Shapes and their properties: A triangle has 33 straight edges and 33 corners. A square and a rectangle both have 44 straight edges and 44 corners. A circle is unique because it has 11 continuous curved edge and 00 corners, appearing perfectly round like a 11-rupee coin.

•

3D Shapes and their properties: A cube or cuboid (like a wooden block) has 1212 straight edges and 88 corners. A cylinder (like a soda can) has 22 curved edges and 00 corners. A sphere (like a ball) has no edges and no corners at all.

•

A cone is a special 3D shape that looks like a party hat. It has 11 curved edge at the bottom where the circular base meets the side, and it has 11 corner (vertex) at the very top point.

•

Tangrams are ancient Chinese puzzles made of 55 or 77 geometric pieces called 'tans'. These pieces, which include triangles of different sizes, a square, and a parallelogram, can be arranged to create various pictures of animals, people, or objects.

•

Tiling or Tessellation is the process of covering a flat surface using repeating shapes so that there are no gaps and no overlaps. Imagine a floor covered in square tiles; the corners and edges fit perfectly to create a continuous pattern.

📐Formulae

Number of Corners in a Triangle=3Number\ of\ Corners\ in\ a\ Triangle = 3

Number of Corners in a Square or Rectangle=4Number\ of\ Corners\ in\ a\ Square\ or\ Rectangle = 4

Number of Corners (Vertices) in a Cube or Cuboid=8Number\ of\ Corners\ (Vertices)\ in\ a\ Cube\ or\ Cuboid = 8

Number of Edges in a Cube or Cuboid=12Number\ of\ Edges\ in\ a\ Cube\ or\ Cuboid = 12

Number of Corners in a Circle=0Number\ of\ Corners\ in\ a\ Circle = 0

💡Examples

Problem 1:

Rohan has a rectangular eraser. He wants to count how many edges and corners it has. Can you help him identify these?

Solution:

  1. A rectangle is a flat 2D shape.
  2. Count the straight boundary lines: Top, Bottom, Left, and Right. Total edges = 44.
  3. Count the points where these lines meet: Top-left, Top-right, Bottom-left, and Bottom-right. Total corners = 44.

Explanation:

Since a rectangle is a four-sided polygon, the number of edges is 44 and the number of corners (vertices) is also 44.

Problem 2:

Identify a 3D shape that has 00 corners and 00 edges. Give a real-life example.

Solution:

  1. Look for a shape with no sharp points (corners) and no boundary lines (edges).
  2. A shape that is completely round in all directions fits this description.
  3. The shape is a Sphere.
  4. Real-life example: A football or a cricket ball.

Explanation:

A sphere consists of a single curved surface. Because it has no flat faces meeting and no lines ending, it has 00 edges and 00 corners.
