Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

Vegetative Reproduction is a type of asexual reproduction where new plants are produced from the vegetative parts of the parent plant, such as roots, stems, and leaves, without the production of seeds or spores.

Reproduction by Roots: Some plants have modified roots that store food and can grow into new plants. Examples include Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatasIpomoea\ batatas) and Dahlia.

Reproduction by Stems: New plants can grow from underground stems like Tubers (Potato - Solanum tuberosumSolanum\ tuberosum), Bulbs (Onion - Allium cepaAllium\ cepa), and Rhizomes (Ginger - Zingiber officinaleZingiber\ officinale). Above-ground stems like Runners (Grass) also facilitate reproduction.

Reproduction by Leaves: Certain plants, such as BryophyllumBryophyllum, produce small plantlets along the margins of their leaves. When these plantlets fall on moist soil, they grow into independent plants.

Artificial Vegetative Propagation: Techniques developed by humans to grow plants commercially. Common methods include Cutting (Rose), Layering (Jasmine), and Grafting (Mango and Citrus fruits).

Advantages: New plants are genetically identical to the parent (Cloneoffspring=CloneparentClone_{offspring} = Clone_{parent}). This method is faster than growing plants from seeds and allows for the reproduction of seedless plants like bananas.

💡Examples

Problem 1:

A gardener wants to grow a new Rose plant from an existing healthy Rose bush. Which method should he use, and why is the new plant called a clone?

Solution:

The gardener should use the Cutting method. The new plant is called a clone because it is produced from a vegetative part, meaning it has the exact same genetic material as the parent.

Explanation:

In 'Cutting', a portion of the stem containing a node is planted in soil. Since no fusion of gametes occurs, the DNA remains 100%100\% identical to the parent.

Problem 2:

Identify the vegetative part used for reproduction in a Potato and describe the role of 'eyes'.

Solution:

The vegetative part is the Underground Stem (Tuber). The 'eyes' are actually axillary buds.

Explanation:

Each 'eye' on a potato (Solanum tuberosumSolanum\ tuberosum) can sprout into a new plant under favorable conditions because it contains meristematic tissue capable of growth.

Problem 3:

Why do farmers prefer vegetative propagation for growing seedless grapes?

Solution:

Since seedless grapes do not produce functional seeds (Seeds=0Seeds = 0), they cannot reproduce sexually.

Explanation:

Vegetative propagation allows farmers to bypass the need for seeds by using stem cuttings or grafting to create new generations of the plant.
