Safety and First Aid - Safety rules at home, school, and playground

Grade 3ICSE

Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

Safety means staying away from harm or danger. Accidents usually happen when we are careless or in a hurry.

Safety at Home: Never touch electrical sockets or wires with wet hands to avoid electric shocks. Do not play with sharp objects like knives, scissors, or needles. Keep the floor dry to prevent slipping (frictionfriction helps us walk, but water reduces it).

Safety at School: Do not run in the corridors or jump on benches and desks. Always walk in a queue while using the stairs.

Safety on the Playground: Always follow the rules of the game. Do not push others while playing on swings or slides. Wait for your turn.

Road Safety: Always cross the road at the Zebra Crossing. Look to the right, then left, and then right again before crossing. Follow traffic light signals: Red means stop, Yellow means wait/get ready, and Green means go.

First Aid: It is the immediate help given to an injured person before a doctor arrives. For a small cut, wash it with clean water and apply an antiseptic lotion or cream.

Emergency Numbers: Always keep a list of emergency contact numbers like the police, fire station, and ambulance handy.

💡Examples

Problem 1:

While playing in the kitchen, Rohan touched a hot pan and burnt his finger. What should be the immediate first aid provided?

Solution:

Wash the burnt area under cool running water for several minutes.

Explanation:

Cool water helps to lower the temperature of the skin and prevents further tissue damage. Do not apply ice directly or any oily substance like butter.

Problem 2:

Why is it dangerous to leave toys scattered on the floor after playing?

Solution:

Someone might trip over them and fall.

Explanation:

Leaving objects on the floor creates an obstacle. If a person is walking and does not see the toy, they may lose their balance and get injured.

Problem 3:

A car is traveling at a speed of 10 m/s10\ m/s. Why should you never try to cross the road right in front of it?

Solution:

The car needs time and distance to stop even if the driver applies brakes suddenly.

Explanation:

Due to momentum and the time taken for the driver to react, a moving vehicle cannot stop instantly. Crossing in front of it can lead to a serious accident.
