Safety and First Aid - Road safety and traffic signs

Grade 3ICSE

Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

Road safety involves following specific rules to prevent accidents and injuries while traveling on roads.

Traffic Lights: Red means StopStop, Yellow/Amber means Wait/SlowdownWait/Slow down, and Green means GoGo.

Zebra Crossing: These are black and white stripes on the road where pedestrians should cross safely.

Pedestrian Rules: Always walk on the footpath. If there is no footpath, walk on the right side of the road facing the oncoming traffic.

Traffic Signs: These are divided into three categories: Mandatory (Circle), Cautionary (Triangle), and Informatory (Rectangle).

First Aid for minor cuts: Wash the wound with clean water and apply an antiseptic like DettolDettol or SavlonSavlon.

📐Formulae

Total Stopping Distance=Thinking Distance+Braking Distance\text{Total Stopping Distance} = \text{Thinking Distance} + \text{Braking Distance}

Speed=DistanceTime\text{Speed} = \frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Time}}

Safety=Rules+Alertness\text{Safety} = \text{Rules} + \text{Alertness}

💡Examples

Problem 1:

If a car is traveling at a speed of v=10 m/sv = 10\text{ m/s}, why is it dangerous to cross the road right in front of it?

Solution:

The car requires a certain distance to stop completely even after the brakes are applied.

Explanation:

Because of momentum, a vehicle cannot stop instantly. The total stopping distance involves the driver's reaction time and the time it takes for the brakes to stop the wheels.

Problem 2:

Identify the type of sign: A red circle with a white horizontal bar in the middle.

Solution:

No Entry sign.

Explanation:

This is a Mandatory Sign. Circular signs with red borders usually indicate orders that must be followed to maintain road discipline.

Problem 3:

What is the correct sequence to look before crossing a road in countries like India (where we drive on the left)?

Solution:

Look Right \rightarrow Look Left \rightarrow Look Right again.

Explanation:

We look right first because the traffic closest to us comes from the right side. We check again to ensure no new vehicle has approached while we were looking left.
