Sensory Organs and Communication - Sharing Our Feelings: Understanding Senses

Grade 3CBSE

Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

Our body has five sense organs: Eyes (Sight), Ears (Hearing), Nose (Smell), Tongue (Taste), and Skin (Touch).

The Skin is the largest sense organ and helps us feel sensations like heat, cold, and pressure. For example, we can feel if water is 0C0^{\circ}C (ice) or 100C100^{\circ}C (boiling).

The Tongue has different taste buds to identify Sweet, Sour, Salty, and Bitter flavors.

People who cannot see use the 'Braille Script,' which consists of raised dots arranged in a 2×32 \times 3 grid pattern to read by touching.

Sign Language and facial expressions are used by people who are hearing or speech impaired to communicate their feelings.

In classical Indian dance, hand gestures called 'Mudras' and facial expressions called 'Bhavas' are used to convey emotions and stories.

Communication is the act of sharing our feelings and thoughts through words, signs, or gestures.

💡Examples

Problem 1:

Ravi is blindfolded. He is given a rose. Which sense organs will he use to identify that it is a flower and that it has thorns?

Solution:

He will use his Nose and his Skin.

Explanation:

He will use his nose to smell the fragrance of the rose and his skin (touch) to feel the sharp texture of the thorns.

Problem 2:

If a person cannot hear sounds, what are two ways they might communicate with you?

Solution:

  1. Sign Language, 2. Written notes or Lip-reading.

Explanation:

People with hearing impairments use visual cues like hand signs and lip movements to understand and share information.

Problem 3:

While eating an orange, Priya noticed it was both sweet and sour. Which organ helped her, and what was the stimulus?

Solution:

The organ used was the Tongue. The stimulus was the chemical taste of the orange.

Explanation:

The tongue contains taste buds that react to different chemicals in food to identify flavors.
