🔑Concepts

Chromosomes are highly coiled structures made of DNA (40%40\%) and Histone proteins (60%60\%). The repeating unit of a chromosome is the nucleosome, consisting of DNA wrapped around a histone octamer.

A DNA nucleotide consists of three components: a Phosphate group, a Pentose sugar (Deoxyribose), and a Nitrogenous base (AA, TT, GG, or CC).

Specific nitrogenous base pairing occurs via hydrogen bonds: Adenine (AA) pairs with Thymine (TT) with two bonds (A=TA=T), and Guanine (GG) pairs with Cytosine (CC) with three bonds (GCG \equiv C).

The Cell Cycle is divided into Interphase (G1G_1, SS, G2G_2) and the MM-Phase (Mitosis).

During the SS-phase (Synthesis phase), DNA replication occurs, doubling the DNA content from 2C2C to 4C4C, although the chromosome number remains 2n2n.

Mitosis consists of four main stages: Prophase (disappearance of nucleolus), Metaphase (alignment at the equatorequator), Anaphase (splitting of centromeres), and Telophase (reappearance of nuclear membrane).

Karyokinesis refers to the division of the nucleus, while Cytokinesis refers to the division of the cytoplasm.

Meiosis occurs in germ cells to produce gametes. It involves two divisions, reducing the chromosome number from diploid (2n2n) to haploid (nn), ensuring constant chromosome numbers across generations.

📐Formulae

Total number of cells after n mitotic divisions=2n\text{Total number of cells after } n \text{ mitotic divisions} = 2^n

Diploid Condition=2n\text{Diploid Condition} = 2n

Haploid Condition=n\text{Haploid Condition} = n

Chargaff’s Rule: [A]+[G]=[T]+[C]\text{Chargaff's Rule: } [A] + [G] = [T] + [C]

💡Examples

Problem 1:

If a human skin cell contains 4646 chromosomes, how many chromosomes and chromatids will be present in the cell during the Metaphase stage of mitosis?

Solution:

Chromosomes: 4646; Chromatids: 9292.

Explanation:

In Metaphase, each of the 4646 chromosomes consists of two sister chromatids joined at the centromere because DNA replication occurred during the SS-phase. Therefore, the number of chromatids is 46×2=9246 \times 2 = 92.

Problem 2:

Calculate the number of mitotic divisions required to produce 128128 cells from a single parent cell.

Solution:

77 divisions.

Explanation:

Using the formula 2n=1282^n = 128, we find 27=1282^7 = 128. Thus, n=7n = 7 divisions are required.

Problem 3:

An onion root tip cell has 2n=162n = 16 chromosomes. What will be the chromosome number in (i) the endosperm and (ii) the pollen grain?

Solution:

(i) 2424 (ii) 88

Explanation:

The endosperm in angiosperms is triploid (3n3n), so 3×8=243 \times 8 = 24. The pollen grain is a gametophyte containing haploid (nn) nuclei, so n=16/2=8n = 16/2 = 8.
