Grade 12CBSEBiology

Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are infections or diseases transmitted through sexual intercourse. They are also known as Venereal Diseases (VD) or Reproductive Tract Infections (RTI).

Common STDs include Gonorrhoea (caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeaeNeisseria\ gonorrhoeae), Syphilis (caused by Treponema pallidumTreponema\ pallidum), Chlamydiasis (caused by Chlamydia trachomatisChlamydia\ trachomatis), and Trichomoniasis (caused by Trichomonas vaginalisTrichomonas\ vaginalis).

Viral STDs include Hepatitis-BB, Genital Herpes (caused by Herpes simplex virusHerpes\ simplex\ virus), Genital Warts (caused by Human papillomavirusHuman\ papillomavirus or HPVHPV), and HIVHIV which leads to AIDSAIDS.

Incurable STDs: Except for HIVHIV infection, Hepatitis-BB, and Genital Herpes, all other STDs are completely curable if detected early and treated properly.

Transmission of Hepatitis-BB and HIVHIV can also occur by sharing injection needles, surgical instruments with infected persons, transfusion of blood, or from an infected mother to the foetus.

Early symptoms are usually minor: itching, fluid discharge, slight pain, and swellings in the genital region.

Complications of untreated STDs: Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases (PIDPID), abortions, stillbirths, ectopic pregnancies, infertility, or even cancer of the reproductive tract.

Prevention measures: Avoid sex with unknown partners or multiple partners, always use condoms during coitus, and seek early medical consultation for any suspicion of infection.

💡Examples

Problem 1:

Identify the pathogen responsible for Syphilis and state whether it is curable.

Solution:

Pathogen: Treponema pallidumTreponema\ pallidum. It is a bacterial infection and is completely curable if detected early.

Explanation:

Syphilis is a bacterial STD. Unlike viral infections like HIVHIV or Hepatitis-BB, bacterial STDs respond to antibiotics and can be eliminated from the body.

Problem 2:

Why is it said that 'Prevention is better than cure' specifically for STDs like HIVHIV and Hepatitis-BB?

Solution:

Because HIVHIV and Hepatitis-BB are currently incurable and can lead to fatal conditions like AIDSAIDS or chronic liver failure.

Explanation:

Since there is no permanent cure for these viral infections, the focus of reproductive health programs is on prevention through education and the use of Barrier MethodsBarrier\ Methods like condoms.

Problem 3:

List three complications resulting from chronic, untreated Reproductive Tract Infections (RTIRTI).

Solution:

  1. Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases (PIDPID)
  2. Ectopic pregnancies
  3. Infertility

Explanation:

Ectopic pregnancy refers to the implantation of the embryo outside the uterus (e.g., in the FallopianFallopian tube), which is a life-threatening complication often caused by scarring from previous STDs.
