Measurement - Converting metric units (length, mass, capacity)

Grade 6IGCSE

Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

The Metric System uses base units: Meters (length), Grams (mass), and Liters (capacity).

Prefixes indicate scale: 'Kilo' means 1000 times larger, 'Centi' means 100 times smaller, and 'Milli' means 1000 times smaller.

Conversion Rule: To convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply by the conversion factor.

Conversion Rule: To convert from a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide by the conversion factor.

Decimal Movement: Multiplying/dividing by 10, 100, or 1000 is equivalent to shifting the decimal point to the right or left.

📐Formulae

1 km=1000 m1 \text{ km} = 1000 \text{ m}

1 m=100 cm1 \text{ m} = 100 \text{ cm}

1 cm=10 mm1 \text{ cm} = 10 \text{ mm}

1 kg=1000 g1 \text{ kg} = 1000 \text{ g}

1 g=1000 mg1 \text{ g} = 1000 \text{ mg}

1 L=1000 mL1 \text{ L} = 1000 \text{ mL}

1 L=100 cL1 \text{ L} = 100 \text{ cL}

💡Examples

Problem 1:

Convert 4.25 kilometers (km) into meters (m).

Solution:

4250 m

Explanation:

Since km is a larger unit than m, we multiply. The conversion factor is 1000. 4.25×1000=42504.25 \times 1000 = 4250.

Problem 2:

Convert 850 grams (g) into kilograms (kg).

Solution:

0.85 kg

Explanation:

Since g is a smaller unit than kg, we divide. The conversion factor is 1000. 850÷1000=0.85850 \div 1000 = 0.85.

Problem 3:

A bottle contains 1.5 liters (L) of juice. How many milliliters (mL) is this?

Solution:

1500 mL

Explanation:

To convert from L to mL, we multiply by 1000. 1.5×1000=15001.5 \times 1000 = 1500.

Problem 4:

Convert 75 millimeters (mm) to centimeters (cm).

Solution:

7.5 cm

Explanation:

To convert from a smaller unit (mm) to a larger unit (cm), we divide by the factor of 10. 75÷10=7.575 \div 10 = 7.5.
