Measurement - Calculating with time and timetables

Grade 6IGCSE

Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

Understanding time units: seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years.

Converting between 12-hour (AM/PM) and 24-hour clock systems.

Calculating time intervals or durations by finding the difference between start and end times.

Reading and interpreting transport timetables (buses, trains, flights) to plan journeys.

Adding and subtracting time by carrying over units of 60 (since 60 minutes = 1 hour).

📐Formulae

1 minute=60 seconds1 \text{ minute} = 60 \text{ seconds}

1 hour=60 minutes1 \text{ hour} = 60 \text{ minutes}

1 day=24 hours1 \text{ day} = 24 \text{ hours}

Duration=Arrival TimeDeparture Time\text{Duration} = \text{Arrival Time} - \text{Departure Time}

24-hour time (PM)=12-hour time+12 hours\text{24-hour time (PM)} = \text{12-hour time} + 12 \text{ hours} (except 12:00 PM)

💡Examples

Problem 1:

A train leaves London at 14:35 and arrives in Edinburgh at 19:15. How long was the journey?

Solution:

4 hours and 40 minutes

Explanation:

Step 1: Calculate time from 14:35 to 15:00 (25 minutes). Step 2: Calculate hours from 15:00 to 19:00 (4 hours). Step 3: Add remaining minutes from 19:00 to 19:15 (15 minutes). Total = 4 hours + 25 mins + 15 mins = 4 hours 40 minutes.

Problem 2:

Convert 165 minutes into hours and minutes.

Solution:

2 hours and 45 minutes

Explanation:

Divide 165 by 60. 165÷60=2165 \div 60 = 2 with a remainder of 45. The quotient (2) represents hours and the remainder (45) represents minutes.

Problem 3:

A flight departs at 10:45 PM and lasts for 3 hours and 30 minutes. What time does it arrive in 24-hour format?

Solution:

02:15

Explanation:

First, convert 10:45 PM to 24-hour time: 22:45. Add 3 hours to 22:45 to get 01:45 (next day). Add the remaining 30 minutes to 01:45. Since 45+30=7545 + 30 = 75 minutes (which is 1 hour and 15 minutes), the time becomes 02:15.
