Measurement - Converting between metric units (mm, cm, m, km, g, kg, ml, l)

Grade 5IGCSE

Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

The Metric System is based on powers of 10 (10, 100, 1000).

To convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit (e.g., m to cm), you multiply.

To convert from a smaller unit to a larger unit (e.g., g to kg), you divide.

Length units include millimeter (mm), centimeter (cm), meter (m), and kilometer (km).

Mass is measured in grams (g) and kilograms (kg).

Capacity/Volume is measured in milliliters (ml) and liters (l).

📐Formulae

1 cm=10 mm1 \text{ cm} = 10 \text{ mm}

1 m=100 cm1 \text{ m} = 100 \text{ cm}

1 m=1000 mm1 \text{ m} = 1000 \text{ mm}

1 km=1000 m1 \text{ km} = 1000 \text{ m}

1 kg=1000 g1 \text{ kg} = 1000 \text{ g}

1 l=1000 ml1 \text{ l} = 1000 \text{ ml}

💡Examples

Problem 1:

Convert 4.5 km into meters.

Solution:

4500 m

Explanation:

To convert from kilometers to meters, we multiply by 1000. 4.5×1000=45004.5 \times 1000 = 4500. Moving the decimal point three places to the right.

Problem 2:

Convert 750 g into kilograms.

Solution:

0.75 kg

Explanation:

To convert from grams to kilograms, we divide by 1000. 750÷1000=0.75750 \div 1000 = 0.75. Moving the decimal point three places to the left.

Problem 3:

A bottle contains 1.2 liters of water. How many milliliters is this?

Solution:

1200 ml

Explanation:

Since 1 l=1000 ml1 \text{ l} = 1000 \text{ ml}, we multiply 1.21.2 by 10001000. 1.2×1000=12001.2 \times 1000 = 1200.

Problem 4:

Convert 85 mm into centimeters.

Solution:

8.5 cm

Explanation:

There are 10 mm in 1 cm. To go from a smaller unit (mm) to a larger unit (cm), divide by 10. 85÷10=8.585 \div 10 = 8.5.
