🔑Concepts

Factors are numbers that divide a given number exactly without leaving any remainder. For example, in the division 15÷3=515 \div 3 = 5, both 33 and 55 are factors of 1515. Visually, if you have 1515 counters, you can arrange them into 33 equal rows of 55 or 55 equal rows of 33, showing that they fit perfectly.

The number 11 is a factor of every number, and every number is a factor of itself. For any number nn, the smallest factor is always 11 and the largest factor is nn.

Factors of a number are always less than or equal to the number itself. Unlike multiples, which can go on forever, the number of factors for any given number is finite and countable. For example, the factors of 1010 are only 1,2,5,101, 2, 5, 10.

Numbers can be classified based on their factors: Prime numbers have exactly two factors (11 and the number itself, like 2,3,5,72, 3, 5, 7), while Composite numbers have more than two factors (like 4,6,8,94, 6, 8, 9).

Common Factors are the factors that are shared between two or more numbers. If you list the factors of 88 (1,2,4,81, 2, 4, 8) and 1212 (1,2,3,4,6,121, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12), the numbers 1,2,1, 2, and 44 appear in both lists. Visually, these can be represented in the overlapping section of a Venn Diagram.

The Highest Common Factor (HCF) is the largest number among all the common factors of two or more numbers. In the previous example of 88 and 1212, the common factors are 1,2,41, 2, 4, and the HCFHCF is 44.

Finding factors can be done using the Factor Rainbow method. You list factors in pairs starting from the outside (11 and the number itself) and work your way inward (2×,3×2 \times \dots, 3 \times \dots). Connecting these pairs with arcs creates a 'rainbow' shape that ensures no factors are missed.

📐Formulae

Dividend=Divisor×Quotient+Remainder\text{Dividend} = \text{Divisor} \times \text{Quotient} + \text{Remainder}

If Remainder=0, then Divisor and Quotient are factors of the Dividend.\text{If Remainder} = 0, \text{ then Divisor and Quotient are factors of the Dividend.}

Number=Factor1×Factor2\text{Number} = \text{Factor}_1 \times \text{Factor}_2

HCF(a,b)=Greatest common value in {Factors of a}{Factors of b}\text{HCF}(a, b) = \text{Greatest common value in } \{\text{Factors of } a\} \cap \{\text{Factors of } b\}

💡Examples

Problem 1:

Find all the factors of 2424.

Solution:

Step 1: Start with 11: 1×24=241 \times 24 = 24. Step 2: Try 22: 2×12=242 \times 12 = 24. Step 3: Try 33: 3×8=243 \times 8 = 24. Step 4: Try 44: 4×6=244 \times 6 = 24. Step 5: Try 55: 2424 is not divisible by 55. Step 6: The next number is 66, which is already in our list. So, the factors are 1,2,3,4,6,8,12,241, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24.

Explanation:

Factors are found by identifying all pairs of whole numbers that multiply together to result in 2424.

Problem 2:

Find the common factors and the HCF of 1212 and 1818.

Solution:

Step 1: List factors of 1212: 1,2,3,4,6,121, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12. Step 2: List factors of 1818: 1,2,3,6,9,181, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18. Step 3: Identify shared factors: 1,2,3,61, 2, 3, 6. Step 4: The largest shared factor is 66. Therefore, HCF=6HCF = 6.

Explanation:

Common factors are identified by comparing the two factor lists. The highest value among them is the HCF.
