Measurement - Converting between metric units (km/m/cm, kg/g, l/ml)

Grade 4IGCSE

Review the key concepts, formulae, and examples before starting your quiz.

🔑Concepts

The Metric System is based on powers of 10 (10, 100, 1000).

To convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit (e.g., km to m), you multiply.

To convert from a smaller unit to a larger unit (e.g., g to kg), you divide.

Length measures distance (km, m, cm, mm), Mass measures weight (kg, g), and Capacity measures liquids (l, ml).

📐Formulae

1 km=1000 m1 \text{ km} = 1000 \text{ m}

1 m=100 cm1 \text{ m} = 100 \text{ cm}

1 kg=1000 g1 \text{ kg} = 1000 \text{ g}

1 l=1000 ml1 \text{ l} = 1000 \text{ ml}

💡Examples

Problem 1:

Convert 5 km into metres.

Solution:

5,000 m5,000 \text{ m}

Explanation:

To convert from kilometres to metres, we multiply by 1,000. 5×1000=50005 \times 1000 = 5000.

Problem 2:

Convert 400 cm into metres.

Solution:

4 m4 \text{ m}

Explanation:

To convert from centimetres to metres, we divide by 100. 400÷100=4400 \div 100 = 4.

Problem 3:

A bag of flour weighs 2,500 g. How many kilograms is this?

Solution:

2.5 kg2.5 \text{ kg}

Explanation:

To convert grams to kilograms, divide by 1,000. 2500÷1000=2.52500 \div 1000 = 2.5.

Problem 4:

A bottle contains 3 litres of water. How many millilitres is that?

Solution:

3,000 ml3,000 \text{ ml}

Explanation:

To convert litres to millilitres, multiply by 1,000. 3×1000=30003 \times 1000 = 3000.
